Under Section 2F and 12B

The University Grants Commission (UGC) provides financial assistance to eligible colleges which are included under Section 2(f) and declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grant) under Section 12 (B) of UGC Act, 1956 as per approved pattern of assistance under various schemes. The number of colleges included under Section 2(f)/12(B) of UGC Act 1956 as on 31.3.2006 is 6014. Out of these, 5449 colleges have been declared eligible to receive central assistance, including UGC grants under Section 12(B) of UGC Act 1956. Remaining 565 colleges are recognized under Section 2(1) of UGC Act 1956 but not yet declared fit for receiving central assistance as they do not fulfill the conditions laid down for such status.

NAAC

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India. To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action (POA-1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body. Consequently, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.

NCTE

The National Council for Teacher Education, in its previous status since 1973, was an advisory body for the Central and State Governments on all matters pertaining to teacher education, with its Secretariat in the Department of Teacher Education of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Despite its commendable work in the academic fields, it could not perform essential regulatory functions, to ensure maintenance of standards in teacher education and preventing proliferation of substandard teacher education institutions. The National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986 and the Programme of Action there under, envisaged a National Council for Teacher Education with statutory status and necessary resources as a first step for overhauling the system of teacher education. The National Council for Teacher Education as a statutory body came into existence in pursuance of the National  Teacher Education Act, 1993 (No. 73 of 1993) enacted on the 17th August,1995.

Minority

The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) was established through the promulgation of an Ordinance. The Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India informed the to the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions Ordinance 2004 (No. 6 of 2004) on 11th November 2004. Thereafter, on 16th November 2004, the Ministry of HRD issued the notification constituting the Commission, with its head quarters in Delhi.
